Bantam Chicken Breeds Information

The Bantam chicken breeds is well known within the chicken world. Approximately a quarter the size of a normal breed the Bantam chicken breeds are a small bird, but it has it's own characteristics. They were spread throughout the world by sea on ships for both their meat and their eggs, and are known in history to have come from the city of Bantam, which is located in Indonesia.

Each Bantam chicken has it's own characteristics, and their are a number of different breeds within this family of chicken. A few of the breeds are the Cochin, Japanese, Barnevelder, common Bantam, Polish, D'Uccle, Old English Game, Pekin, Serama and Sussex bantams. Each has different characteristics.

The Pekin breed, for example, has plumage that hangs to the ground and also has feathers on their feet and legs. The Polish chicken has pink, purple and blue colors and produce pure white eggs. Both of these breeds are very popular for shows. The Cochin is the largest, weighing as much as 11 pounds, while the Barnevelder is popular for egg production, carcass and shows.

The coloring of the bantam is beautiful and has more varied and colorful patterns than regular chickens. They are used as show chickens, as well as layers, and are very popular with 4-H clubs as they are easy to handle and display. Although they are small, they still require the same amount of food and water as a larger breed.

The rooster is well known in the UK and can be aggressive and loud, unlike the hen which is quiet. The hen is an excellent egg producer as well as for hatching eggs and is very protective of her brood. The Bantam is an excellent pet to have if you want your garden or flower beds to be free from insects and bugs.

Raising Bantams has a number of advantages. Their beautiful coloring and variety of feathering make them a very attractive pest or show birds and they do not require a great deal of space. These hens are excellent at hatching their own eggs, and have also been known to hatch the eggs of other bird species, such as geese and quail. For show bird they are ideal to transport to shows due to their relatively small size. In addition, they use up much smaller yard or coop space than regular sized chickens.

For owners of these chickens that keep them for egg production, it is common to keep them in a specific type of chicken coop or pen. These pens are smaller than those needed for regular sized birds. It is always recommended that the coop get plenty of morning sun because warmth is important for them.

To keep the pen dry it should be raised above ground level, which will also help with ventilation of the coop. To avoid disease from spreading, the straw should be changed regularly and the coop cleaned. Providing some kind of wire around the coop is always wise to keep any potential predators at bay. With good care it can be expected that a member of the Bantam chicken breeds will live approximately 10 years

Ive got some chicken questions?

I have a Cochin Buff chick about 5 weeks old. Id like to find out if it a boy or girl and ways to tell how?
Also...
I was thinking of hatching more chicks, if i got fertilized eggs and switch them out with the ones my hen is sitting on will she hatch them? Does it have to be a "certain time of year"?

It's difficult to tell the sex of a chick. You might need a professional to do it. Both roosters and hens will develop a comb, so you can't go by that. Your first clue may come when the chicken lays an egg.

A hen will sit on eggs when she is "broody", and only then. Otherwise, she may eat them. She will be broody for about 28 days in the spring, the length of time needed to hatch. If she is a week or two into her broody period then there will not be enough time to hatch new eggs. You will need an incubator.

A broody hen will want to sit on her eggs and will stay there almost non-stop for the entire month. If you mess with her while she is broody she will get very angry and snap at you. One of my pet hens went broody on me once and it was frightening until I found out what it was.
