Ways To Go About Installing An Electric Fence
When it comes to the protection of your property from all unauthorized access, and to restrict movements in and out of an area, electric fencing is definitely a great idea to help achieve those purposes. The shock levels generated from electric fencing are enough to put a halt to all unnecessary and needless movements whenever there is need to do that. However, setting up an electric fence could prove to be a rather daunting task. To make the setup process easier, it would be good to suggest ways to go about implementing an electric fencing on your property.
For the installation, you are going to need: Fence posts, gauge wire insulated for 20,000 volts, insulation wrap, electric fence controller, pliers, hammer, screwdrivers, wire-strippers, galvanized grounding rods, pole hole digger and brass clamps.
To start the installation, find a dry spot that is clean to keep the electric fencing controller; such spot must not be exposed to rain and wind, and must be close to a 120 volts polarized outlet. However, the controller must not be plugged into the outlet yet. Next, drive a galvanized grounding rod into the ground. The rod whose length needs to be about 6 ft., minimum, should not be too far from the controller; between 15-20 feet away would be okay. For best results, two additional grounding rods can also be buried in the ground with a space of about 10 feet between them. A brass clamp is used to attach the rod firmly to the grounding rod, which is joined to the electric fencing controller through the use of grounding wire capable of transferring up to 20,000 volts.
The next stage involves erecting the fence posts around the area that you need guarded with about 50 feet distance in-between them. But that distance is not fixed, you only need to make sure that the posts are not too far apart to cause the circuit to be broken due to lack of flexibility. When done, you can now start with the wiring. Start with the farthest post away from your electric fencing controller. Make sure you make use of good joins and also, to prevent corrosion, use insulation wrap. The height of rows of wire in electric fencing depends on the type of movements that you wish to restrict.
Now, use a 10-14 gauge insulated wire for 20,000 volts as a jumper to connect the rows of wire in the electric fence. After this, connect the top wire to the electric fencing controller, and go ahead to review what you have done to make sure that they were properly done. When satisfied, plug the electric fencing controller into the 120 volts polarized outlet and an indicator light should indicate that the electric fencing was successful. You may now use a voltmeter to test if the electric current is adequately circulated across the fence.

Can you use an extension cord to make an electric fence?
I have a fence up already, chain length fence. What I want to do is take an old extension cord and cut one end off of it and cut the plastic or what ever off the wires on the inside of the cord, exposing maybe 2 - 3 inches of bare wire to be connected to the chain length fence. Then plug the other end into the outlet, making the fence an electric fence. Can this be done?
No. Not at all. That's not how an electric fence works. Doing it that way will probably cause it to ground out and trip the circuit breaker. Real electric fence systems use a transformer device similar to a Tesla Coil to charge the fence with a current that has very high voltage but low current making them non - lethal.
