Bantam Hatching

Bantam Chickens Are An Excellent Choice For A Backyard Flock
Bantam chickens have long been a popular breed in all parts of the world. Bantams got their name from the Indonesian city of Bantam, which at one time was a major seaport. Sailors coming into and out of the port took a liking to the small Southeeast Asian breed, and their popularity quickly spread. The famous explorer Marco Polo wrote about the breed in one of his journals.
Bantam chickens are known to be an active breed, spending most of their time foraging for food, and actively dusting and preening their plumage. Bantams clean and preen their feathers in a leisurely fashion several times a day. With their beaks they put each and every feather in its proper place, and then preen them by distributing oil over them.
Bantams have become increasingly popular over the years in backyard flocks, and for show purposes as well because they are smaller and have more varied and exotic colors and feather patterns than other breeds of chickens. They are ideally suited for smaller backyards. Bantam hens are also used as laying hens, although Bantam eggs are only about one-half to one-third the size of a regular hen egg. Bantam chickens eat the same foods as other breeds, but if allowed to free range will eat more insects and vegetation than grains. In commercial situations they are fed grain based foods because of the lack of foraging areas.
The Bantam rooster is famous in rural areas throughout the United Kingdom and the United States for its aggressive, cocky disposition that at times can be comical. The breed is often referred to as "Banty" in the rural areas of the United States.
Bantam hens are renowned for hatching and brooding purposes. Bantams will clutch a variety of eggs from quail up to two goose eggs. Hens are known as fiercely protective mothers, with a high success rate in rearing any egg hatched.
Many people enjoy raising the breed in their backyard, although other breeds would be a better choice for meat and egg production. The breed is especially at risk when raised as free ranging because of their small size and curious manner. Ideally you should surround the chicken run with a wire mesh perimeter fence that runs about a foot underground to prevent attacks from predators such as foxes and raccoons and you should consider a wire mesh on top to protect the chickens from hawks and owls.
For the pure joy and satisfaction of having your own flock of backyard chickens, Bantams are indeed an excellent choice. The little birds will surely provide you and your family hours of enjoyment. Starting your own flock from Bantam hatching eggs is an ideal way to begin raising your own birds. The breed requires less space than larger breeds and is a good choice for a small backyard operation.

I have a sitting bantam. Another bantam sits on the nest with her at night.?
What will happen if the eggs hatch? I have several other hens, none have ever sat before. We decided to let this one sit, since she has been so serious about it. But, I am a little worried about the other little bantam hen that sits on the nest with her at night. Will the 'real' mother run her off, or will they both look out for the chicks?
Thanks for the answers so far...great help! I'm not sure about the 'lesbian' thing, but the little one that sits with her at night is very tiny and gets picked on a little by the rest. I got her and the 'real' Mama together last year, and they stick close together a lot of the time, but the older hens do pick on her. Maybe she feels safe, and I do hope the real Mama lets her help care for the babies. Thanks for the answers.
It may be possible that the hen who sits on the nest with her at night is just sleeping there. I raise chickens and hens often like to sleep in the nest box, especially if they see other hens there. If there's eggs in the box, theyll just settle down right on top of them and the leave the nest in the morning.
What happens after the eggs hatch will probably depend on the temperament of the hens and which hen is higher in the 'peck order'. What breed are they? Some bantam breeds are known for their tendency to form communal nests and share young. Others are known for their aggressiveness. The best thing you can do is watch carefully, and if the babies are getting pecked and Mamma isnt defending or protecting them under her wings, put the two hens in seperate cages.
